TASKS

Tasks are used to discover information and update MP3 files. Tasks run in the application background, so you can continue to work on your music collection while they run.

The scope of a task can be the entire music collection, or a subset of artists, albums and tracks.

To create a new task, open the Task panel on the right of the track-tree, and click the new task button. The same button appears in the quick-fire group on the summary panel. To create a new task for an artist, select the artist, right-click, and select "New Task" from the popup-menu.

TASK - READ MP3 DETAILS
The most basic task is called "Read MP3 Details". This task goes through every MP3 file, discovering information about the duration of the track, and the quality (bit rate and sampling rate). As the task runs the track-tree will be updated with this information in columns on the right of the track name.

TASK - PUMP DURATION
The duration of an MP3 track can be very useful when comparing tracks. If you have two tracks with the same name and the same duration, it is probable that they are the same. If one is 2 minutes longer, it may be a remix or a different version, in which case you may want to keep both.

The duration tag in an MP3 file is not always set. The task "Pump Duration" calculates the duration of an MP3 track, and sets the value in the MP3 tags, making the information quickly available to the "Read MP3 Details" task. (Calculating the duration of a track does take some time. Reading a tag value does not.)

TASK - CHECK MP3 FILES
When an MP3 file bit rate is below 128Kbs the sound quality is noticeably poor. The "Check MP3 Files" task identifies tracks with low bit rate and flags them.

STOPPING AND STARTING TASKS
Tasks can be stopped and started using the button at the bottom of the Task panel. When a music collection is closed, all tasks are stopped.
