THE SNOWBALL MANUAL SWAP-DOCS Swap-Docs are a way of comparing music collections over the Internet, but without allowing anyone remote access to your computer. A Swap-Doc is an XML file containing details of every track in your music collection. XML is a textual computer language, similar to the HTML used to make web pages. XML can be opened by a browser or by a software application, so both humans and applications can read the data. Swap-Docs can be sent to friends by attaching them to emails. If you receive a Swap-Doc you can open it using the Snowball application, and see which music collection of the person who sent it. Then you can build a Swap-Doc-Request, a list of tracks in the Swap-Doc you would like. CREATING A SWAP-DOC To create a Swap-Doc, click "Swap-Docs, Make a Swap-Doc..." from the main menu. ![]() Select a target filepath for your Swap-Doc. The Swap-Doc can also have a name to help the recipient recognize it. If you have grouped your music into clusters, you can limit your Swap-Doc to a one or more clusters, or alternatively include all tracks. Make sure the Open file when complete open is checked, and click OK. When the Swap-Doc has been created, Snowball will attempt to open it with whatever application you have associated with the XML file extension. CREATING A SWAP-DOC-REQUEST When you receive someone else's Swap-Doc, you may want to request music from them. To do this, open their Swap-Doc by clicking "Swap-Docs, Make a Swap-Doc-Request..." from the main menu. In the Open Swap-Doc window, use the browse button to locate a Swap-Doc file, and click OK. The Make a Request Swap-Doc window will open. ![]() The Make a Request Swap-Doc window is used to identify the tracks you want to request that were listed in a Swap-Doc sent to you. The tracks in the Swap-Doc are displayed in the left tree, and the selected tracks in the right tree. Using the add and remove buttons, tracks can be moved to and from the Selected tree. Move some tracks into the selected tree and click the Save button. ![]() The Save Swap-Doc Request window is where you select where you want the Swap-Doc-Request saved, as well as setting some final parameters. The Notes section is free text to enter a message for the recipient. The Delivery options indicate how you want to receive the tracks. Make sure the Open file when complete option is checked and click OK to create the Swap-Doc-Request file. This file can now be sent to the person you received the original Swap-Doc from, as an email attachment. |
