THE SNOWBALL MANUAL NAMES AND NAMING CONVENTIONS There are many points in the Snowball application where you are required to enter an artist or an album name. However not all names are valid. Some names are illegal because they contain characters that cannot be used by the Windows file system. And some names would result in incorrect indexing. The easiest way to correct a bad name is to select "Fix" from the drop-down menu to the right of the text box. THE An artist's name cannot begin with "The". For example, "The Smiths" is wrong. If artist names could begin with "The", a disproportionate number of artist would appear under the index "T". If you enter an artist name prefixed with "The" an error will popup asking you to correct it. [An exception to this rule is if the name already ends in "The", then it is allowed to being with "The." For example, the band "The The" can be entered as "The, The".] ILLEGAL CHARACTERS Some characters are not legal for use in file and folder names. Examples are "?" or "/" or quotation marks. (The quotation character is particularly useful if you want to put (12" EP) on the end of a track name.) To get round this, Snowball uses some encoding.
(Note that the full stop or period character is a legal in a folder name, however it is encoded as [PT] to prevent confusion with the file extension.) So you may see some strange file and folder names when you look in your Snowball music collection folder using Window Explorer, but they are valid for a Windows system, and will appear correctly in your Snowball track-tree. |
