THE SNOWBALL MANUAL MAKING A COMPILATION Start by creating a new Artist. Open the main menu (blue button, top-left), and click "New artist...". This is your album, so the name of the artist will be your name. ![]() Leave the Set this as the context box unchecked, and click OK. CREATING A COMPILATION ALBUM Find your new artist in the track tree. Use the Index buttons to move around.
Right click your new artist and select "New album..." from the context menu. In the New Compilation Album window, enter the name of your album, for example, "Driving to work". Leave the Set this as the context box unchecked, and click OK. ![]() A new album will appear under your artist. ADDING TRACKS TO YOUR ALBUM (THE PAINFULL WAY) Now you can fill your album with tracks. Find a track you like somewhere in your collection. Right click on it, and click "Create shortcut...". In the Select Shortcut Target form, click the Browse button, and find your new album. Click OK. A track shortcut will appear in your album. ![]() This is a laborious way of creating a compilation album. ADDING TRACKS TO YOUR ALBUM (BY DRAGGING) Another way to add tracks to your album is to have both your album, and the track visible on the screen. Then drag the track onto your album whilst holding down the LEFT ALT button. If you don't hold down the LEFT ALT button, you will move the track. This is quick, but relies on both the track and your album to be visible at the same time, and with very large music collections this is not likely. ADDING TRACKS TO YOUR ALBUM (THE EASY WAY) |

The easiest way to build an album is by using "contexts". Right click your album and from the popup-menu click "Make Context". Your album details will be displayed in Context panel on the right of the screen. Now find a track you want in your album, right click it and from the popup-menu select "Add to context". After adding tracks to your album you will want to put them in a specific order. In the context panel, with your album tracks listed, move the tracks up and down using the up and down arrow buttons. When they are in order, click the dropdown button at the top-right of the list, and select "Renumber tracks" Note that shortcut tracks have numbers in square brackets preceding their name. For example, in my compilation album I might have a track called: [07] 02 Living on a prayer.mp3 The track "02 Living on a prayer.mp3" is a real track stored in the Bon Jovi artist. But when it is shortcut to my compilation, I don't want it as track 2, I want it as track 7. The number in square brackets is the track number for the shortcut. |

COPYING OUT If you've got this far, you have created an album full of your tracks. It's time to put it on your MP3 player. Firstly, make sure your MP3 player is connected to your PC system. (Your MP3 player must have memory-stick architecture, so this will not work for IPods at present.) Right-click your album and click "Copy Out" from the popup menu. ![]() At the top of the Copy Out window is the Target Folder box. Enter the path to your MP3 player. At the bottom of the screen are two sets of options. The Folder Layout defines how the tracks will be stored on the target MP3 player. The Single Folder option stuffs all tracks into the root folder. The Preserve Layout option stores tracks under their artist and album. The Duplicate File Names options determine what to do if there is a file on your MP3 player with the same name as the track about to be copied. The first option is to assume the track has been previously copied, and to ignore the track. The second option is to sidestep the file by renaming the track about to be copied to a unique name. For example, "02 Living on a prayer.mp3" would become "02 Living on a prayer (copy 2).mp3". When you are ready to copy the tracks out, click the Start button. Next: Ripping a CD |
