CONNECTION TO SNOWBALL-NET

Snowball can cannect to other Snowballs over the Internet or a local network. The inter-connection of Snowballs over a network is called "Snowball-NET".

The Snowball application can be a server that makes a music collection available for other Snowballs to connect to. Or a client that connects to a someone elses Snowball. Or both. Or Snowball can operate as a stand alone application without any connection to the outside World.

BROCCOLI ACCOUNT
Before you can join the Snowball-NET you need to have an online account with Broccoli Products. You can set this up here:

http://www.broccoliproducts.com/software/snowball/logon.php

A Broccoli account includes a username, a password, and a handle. (The username and password are for your own use. No one else sees them. What everyone else sees is your handle. If you want to show someone your music collection you give them your handle. You never give them your username.) The details of your Broccoli account must be stored in the Snowball application before any Snowball-NET activity can take place.

To enter your Broccoli account, open the main menu (the blue button in the top left) and click "Snowball-NET, My Broccoli account...".

Enter your Broccoli account username and password. Use the Lookup button to retrieve your handle. Before clicking OK, use the Test button to verify your account details.

THE SNOWBALL-NET ADDRESS BOOK
The address book is used to store the details of the other Snowballs on the Snowball-NET. To add an entry to your address book, you need the Broccoli account handle and the Snowball-NET password for someone elses Snowball.

NOTE: The Snowball-NET password is not the same as the Broccoli account password. The Broccoli account passsord goes with the Broccoli username and is used by you to gain access to your Broccoli account. The Snowball-NET password is something you tell other Snowball users who want to see your music collection.

To open the address book, open the main-menu and click "Snowball-NET, Address book...".

To add a new address click the Add button.

In the Description box, enter your own description for the account. No one else sees this. Enter the Broccoli Handle and the Snowball-NET password given to you by another Snowball user.

Click the Test button to check the Broccoli handle. If the details are valid a message will popup saying that the address has been verified or that the account is not presently active on the Snowball-NET.

SNOWBALL-NET SETTINGS
To open the Snowball-NET settings, open the main menu and click "Snowball-NET, Settings...".

At the top of the Settings window is your Broccoli Account. Click the link if you want to edit your account.

Your Network Location is where you specify how other Snowball applications will connect to you.

The Port is an IP Port. You can choose any value between 2000 and 65535. Choose a port that is not being used by another application.

If you are on a local network, and all of the computers that will connect to your music collection are on the same local network, choose the Local network address option. For example, if you set up Snowball in your home so that you can access you music from other rooms in the house.

If you want access to your music collection from outside of the local Network, for example between home and work, select Internet network address.

NOTE: Computers access the Internet through a firewall. Within the firewall is your local network. Beyond the firewall is the Internet. The firewall prevents anyone on the Internet seeing your computer. All they see is a firewall. So if you want access to your computer over the Internet you will need to set your firewall to allow connectivity between the Internet and your computer on a specific port. How this is done depends on which firewall you have, but if you use applications like Bit Torrent then you will have done this before. Go into your firewall settings, and for the port that you have specified as your Snowball-NET port (for example 16242) setup a firewall service to accept all connections on that port, and pass them on to your computers IP address.

In the Snowball-NET Security box, enter a password. This is the password other Snowball users will need to connect to your Snowball.

Add to the Access List all of the handles that you will grant access to your Snowball. Unless a user's handles appears in this box, they will not be able to see your music collection.

Click Apply to save the details. If you want to put yourself on the Snowball-NET, click the Start button.

CONNECTING TO ANOTHER SNOWBALL
To connect to another Snowball, open your address book, select a handle from the list, and click the Connect button. If the remote Snowball is active, and you are on its access list, the Track-Adder will popup.

Another way of connecting is to open the main menu and select "Transfer from Snowball-NET".

This is the same Track-Adder used for absorbing and ripping. For Snowball-NET transfers, the left side of the window shows a shapshot of the remote music collection. Use the index buttons at the top to move around. To download a track or tracks, select an artist, album or track, and click the Add button. The track will be moved to the target panel on the right. When ready, click the Start button to transfer the tracks.

The Track-Adder has a mass of features that allow you to make sure your tracks go exactly where you want them to, and to prevent tracks being added that are already in your collection. For more advanced use of the Track-Adder, see Advanced Track-Adder operations.

When finished, click the Close button to disconnect from the Snowball-NET. If you do not downloaded within 5 minutes you will be automatically disconnected.
