ADDING TRACKS

Tracks can be added to your collection in five different ways.

Absorption Copying tracks from another location on your hard disk or on a memory stick.

Ripping Copying music from an audio CD. See Ripping for more information.

Snowball-NET     Copying music from a Snowball application that is connected to the Internet. See Connecting to Snowball-NET for instructions.

Swap-Docs An extended form of absorption for en-masse music collection synchronization. See Swap-Docs.

Conversion WAV files can be converted to MP3 tracks.

To absorb tracks into your collection, open the main menu and click "Absorb from hard disk or memory stick...". Or double-press "A".

Enter a Source folder that contains an album of MP3 files. Make sure the "Include sub-directories" box is checked, and click OK.

MP3 tracks can contains "tags" - embedded information about artist, album and song title. However many MP3 files don't contain any tags, or they contain links to dodgy web sites. If an MP3 file cannot be recognized by its tags, it will have to be identified manually, using the window shown below.

The tracks that cannot be recognized appear in red. The tracks in red need to be identified or removed.

In this example, the tracks all belong to the same album. To identify the track click the "Select All" button, and then the "Properties..." button.

Make sure the Artist box is checked and enter the artist name. Do the same for the album name. Click the OK button to continue.

There is another opportunity later to change the artist and album name again before the tracks are added.

[Note that the artist name has the "The" at the end. If I had put "The Jesus and Mary Chain" an error would have popped up. See naming conventions.]

When all of the new tracks have been identified, the Track-Adder window pops up. The Track-Adder is used for absorbing, ripping and transfers over Snowball-NET. On the left of the Track-Adder is the Source panel, showing a list of new tracks ready to be added to your collection. On the right is the Target panel, showing where the new tracks will appear if they are added to your collection.

To add all of your new tracks to the target window, select the folder in the source tree (in this case "E:\downloads\psychocandy") and click "Add All".

Click the Start button to add the tracks to your collection. When the process is complete, a summary of the new tracks is displayed.

The Track-Adder has a mass of features that allow you to make sure your tracks go exactly where you want them to, and to prevent tracks being added that are already in your collection. For more advanced use of the Track-Adder, see Advanced Track-Adder operations.
