USER GUIDE

bullet Introduction bullet

The SimpleFtp application has been designed to provide the necessary functions for moving files between a computer and a remote FTP site, and at the same time being simple to operate.

The picture below shows the SimpleFTP application main window.

main window

The left side of the screen shows files and folders on the local system, i.e. your computer.  The right side shows files and folders on a remote FTP site, somewhere on the Internet.

The active folder is displayed at the top of each list.  To change the active folder, double-click on a folder in the list, or right-click and select Open from the context menu.

When the application starts, the local home folder is displayed.  This is a list of drives, comparable to the My Computer list in Windows explorer.

When there is no connection to a remote FTP site, the "no connection" message is displayed.

The four buttons down the centre of the window allow you to change the active folder for the local and remote systems, and upload and download files.

home The home button returns to the top parent folder.  For the local system, the home folder is the list of drives.  For the remote system the home folder is the root path associated with the FTP service account.
The "back" button moves to the parent of the current active folder.
The left and right arrow buttons copy files and folders from the local system to the remote system, and vice versa.  When a local folder is selected, the folder and all of its contents are copied.  For the remote system, only files can be copied..
Refreshes the list of files and folders.

Right click a file to open the context menu.  Context menu options include:

Open Opens a file with the default application for selected file type.
Open with... Displays a list of applications associated with the selected file type.
Upload Uploads the selected files and folders to the remote FTP site.
Download Downloads one or more files from the selected FTP site.
New Folder Creates a new folder on the local or remote systems.
Delete Deletes the selected files and folders. For remote folder, the contents of the folders are deleted before the folder is deleted.

bullet Jobs bullet

When SimpleFtp is instructed to upload, download or delete a file, these tasks are performed in the background as indiviudal "jobs".  A list of jobs is displayed at the base of the main window.  Because jobs are performed in the background the user can continue to move around the local and remote systems without having to wait for the job to finish.  This is particularly useful if you are copying large files.

Jobs are listed as pending, in-process, or complete.  Completed jobs that fail appear in red.  Once jobs are complete they are removed from the list after about 10 seconds.

bullet Connections bullet

To create a new connection, select Connections, Add... from the main menu.  In the Connection Details form enter the Ftp account details for an Ftp site.  You will have received the username, password and address details from your internet service provider.  The address can be an IP address or a website domain name.  The optional local folder path is the local folder that will be the workspace for the remote site.  When a connection is opened, SimpleFtp automatically switches to the local folder path.

To connect, select Connection, Connect from the main menu.  To disconnect, select Connection, Disconnect from the main menu, or close the application.
